The devil giving birth to the patriarchy |
Mary Beth Edelson was a feminist artist since the 1960s and was considered a pioneer because she was one of the most prominent artists during her time. She was known as the "first generation feminist artist." Her work stood out to me the most because in her posters she acknowledged other feminist women and praised their success as well. She was a civil rights activist who also published books and created photographs as well. I liked that she didn't stick to only paintings but other forms of artwork as well such as unique sculptures that displayed women in a distinct way. One of Edelson's iconic work is the reproduction of Michelangelo's "the last supper" and replaces all the heads of the men to notable women artists followed by a collage around it with other successful women. I like how she's dedicated to bringing to light more of women artists through the use of a famous work of Michelangelo.
