Nina Chanel Abney is an African American contemporary artist and painter who explores races, gender, pop culture and politics in her work. She works out of Jersey City, New Jersey, which I found very exciting because she works so close to where I live. I found her work to be very eye catching with the way she integrates the different colors and shapes. She uses bright colors and symbols as new ways to address the controversial topics in which her paintings represent. She has said that her work is ,"easy to swallow, hard to digest", meaning her work is easy to look at but has a powerful meaning behind it. That concept is what I liked most about her. Her work tells a story in the painting. She get inspiration from her dreams and personal life experiences. More recently her work has figured police brutality, which have lead people to believe her work is associate with the Black Lives Matter movement. Her work inspires and conveys a great message to the audience and artist lovers.
