Kara Walker

Madeline Pitti
Criticial Artist Expression

A female artist I believe that portrays social issues would be Kara Walker, an African American artist who uses black and white silhouettes. Even though they may seem simple, they hold meaning. Sometimes, it makes it hard to figure out where is what and I think that even makes it more special. She portrays issues like racism and slavery that many people find offensive. She inspired other artists after her like Kahinde Wiley to push issues like the ones mentioned into light. She wasn't afraid of portraying racial stereotypes, and instead does it to remind people that this is real. It is tough and sometimes frightening to talk about issues some are too afraid to talk about, but Kara Walker is brave and so I admire her and her works.
If we take a closer look at her art, we can make out images like that of white slaveowners who often raped their slaves (picture on the top with the rooftop).
