Professor Cacoilo
Critical Artist Expression
Kiki Kogelnik, who turned away from European abstract and Viennese avant-garde art scene; moved to Santa Monica than to New York. After meeting many American pop artists, she was inspired by their work and technology advancements. Her art was not only known to portray feminists that took on a male-dominated art scene, but also exploring the human body. Through the boom in the technology environment of a post-war consumer society; Kogelnik explored her art using new materials she could find, and created her signature pop art style that consists of vinyl. It was during the space race, that sparked her interest to rockets and space travel; which made her question dehumanization of an individual self in a mass-consumerist society marked by violent political conflicts. And so, one of her art works appointed to an international conflict "Bomb in Love" 1962, made of two brightly colored bombs referencing to peace. She adds a bit of humor in each of her pieces that also consists a strong meaning.
