Critical Artist Expression
Mona Hatoum is a Palestinian artist. Her art mostly includes minimalism and surrealism, installing grids and sculptures of geometric forms indicating controlling systems in our society. Mona's earlier works were political statements referenced to the war zone situation in Palestine. Some of her works are even more personal like the "Measures of Distance" video. It contains photographs of Mona's mother showering with an overlay of letters written by her mother to the artist herself. The art is personal because Mona is trying to depict the difficulty of sending letters in that time period, her mother used to live in Beirut and would try to send letters to her daughter who at the time lived in London. Instead of outright showing the political wars going on in Palestine or Lebanon, Mona instead showed the effect these conflicts had on people and in this situation to herself and her family.
