Tschabalala Self
Growing up, Self realized black women were sexualized in plasters, while white women were usually seen on 'Playboy Magazines.' Now-a-day Self tries to use her paintings to convey women to express their experiences using their bodies. She confronts racism by adding human emotion into her work. In so she displays qualities such as emotion, physical/psychological problems in black women as an 'icon.' Most of Self's work you can view hold the flat image with two-dimensional aspects. Overall Self's niche is defining the depictions of the black female bodies in contemporary America. She incorporates culture by giving her work understanding and meaning of black femininity.
