Semester Project Proposal
By Jenna Arvelo
My semester project will be based on nine painting I created for the purpose of reclaiming the imagery surrounding women of color. My point in doing this is to emphasize the power of representation and its relation to how others interact with those representations. I want these women to be seen as individuals who exist in the same spaces as non people of color (and especially women) and give them as much importance as any other American or human existing in the United States. Because of the historical traditions of portraiture mostly exclude people of color as significant individuals, I created a series that did just that.
I am going to be having an exhibition on the 5th floor in Bradly in the small gallery space.
There will be nine portraits of various women of color displayed depicting inspiring women I have come across on instagram or in real life. Some of these women are my actual friends. There will be an artist's statement a guestbook and refreshments. I have set up the date to be the 12th of December at 6 pm to 8 pm. The paintings are 18' x 24' oil on canvas.
