Semester Project

Desiree Roman
Cynthia Patel
We are going to do a survey incorporating rape and domestic violence. In our survey we want to discuss and portray how women face many problems in society when stepping out off the house. We want to turn our results from the survey into a graph. Both genders are victims of rape and domestic violence however, women 99% of the time are the main target. We want to convey that the only solution to this problem is if women cover up and that is in fact a huge problem. Women have to alter their appearance and change their behavior so they won’t be a victim. Why is it that women have to be blamed for rape? They wear a certain outfit, so they are subjected to rape? We want to illustrate how men need to change their ways instead of women. Examples of how they can change their ways would be to not sexualize women, not to take advantage of women when they aren’t able to function due to alcohol, and for them to not mistaken friendliness as an entryway to a woman’s pants. Men obviously are stronger than women physically. Will  that ever give them a right to abuse women? A high school student who happens to be a girl, Gracie Holtzclaw created artwork but the school refused to present her artwork because it was ‘too inappropriate’. The painting is named “Rape Culture”; she paints the top half of a woman naked but part of her breasts are covered. The Male Gaze connects also with domestic violence and rape because women are objects to the male pleasure. Natasha Rodriguez and David Wolanski both have exhibits of domestic violence through the lens of a photographer and the canvas of a painter. They say that the exhibit is a reference to show that people really don’t know what’s going beneath the surface. They both want to bring awareness to domestic violence. Overall, our video will focus on the problems that women face in their own skin (rape, domestic violence) and how artist’s convey that. We also want to include solutions to hopefully overcome these challenges that majority of the women face because they cannot speak up for themselves or tell anybody. We don’t want women to be taken advantage of anymore, we want our survey to convey this message!
Questions
  • #MeToo, No More campaign which is a non-profit organization that speaks out about domestic violence, Art Against Assault.com, Browngirl Magazine.
  • Our project will consist of topics regardings rape culture and domestic violence.
  • We will create a video that will have certain scenario(s) about common problems that often women face in society and when stepping out of the house.
  • We also want to somehow connect the topics to other cultures and how women are affected by it.
  • What is often said about rape culture? What needs to be done to fix this hideous problem in society? Why are women still being blamed for rape?
  • Why do we teach our women to dress and act a certain way in order to avoid getting raped? Why have we not started to teach our boys how to treat and act around a woman despite of what she is wearing, how drunk she is or how friendly she is with you?
  • Who is teaching them it is okay to violate a woman? That it is okay to rip their clothes off and force themselves inside of her? Who is teaching them that when a woman speaks out for a basic human right, it is okay for a man to feel upset about it and slap her across the face?
  • Why can men not understand that women are not weak. Women are strong human beings. They are also human just like men are. After all women give birth to all men.
  • Why is it that men do not think of their mother, sister, aunts, or grandmothers when committing such a hideous crime?
  • Could it be because they simply think it is okay for women to be raped because they are “weaker” than men?

  1. This is another crucially important topic. Here's an article that is very recent, but could also apply to your semester project as well: http://time.com/time-person-of-the-year-2017-silence-breakers/
