Alisha Robinson, Semester Project Proposal

Kara Walker Final Semester Project
For this final project, I hope to focus on the deeper message of her artwork and how it impacts African American history. Most of her artwork uses “silhouettes,” and Walker states that she uses them because they, “say a lot with very little information.” I plan to create this project by making an interactive powerpoint with some of her work included in it, and also some brief descriptions of the artwork. Also, I want to make the powerpoint like a life story for Kara Walker and include some of her more popular , artwork pieces in chronological order to show the progression of her as an artist. I am going to include videos, music and other media to make the project more live and interesting for the audience.

I believe Kara Walker is a great choice for an artist to make a project on because her work exposes racial inequalities that many minorities still even face today. Although most of her work revolves around 16C and 17C African American perspectives, the way she designs her work is more simple and modern like. Many audiences describe her work as beautiful and disturbing, and that is exactly how I want this project to be. I want to show the audience how creative she was as an artist but also relay the deeper meaning of some of the artwork to really understand why she created some of the pieces.
