For
my semester project I plan on creating a Tumblr Blog on sexual abuse. I plan to
use work of artist that focus on sexual abuse and of women artist that have
personal experience in this topic. I will be featuring Betty
Tompkins, Judith Bernstein, Emma Sulkowic in my Blog . I
will also like to include some of the stories of the
women Artist that were sexual abused if I able to find them. I
would to My Blog will have pictures of exhibitions from museums that
showcase artist work on this topic. With this Blog I would like
to explore how other victims of sexual abuse connect with others who have
also been sexually abused as well.
This project
is important to me because I had an experience with a friend who was
sexually abused and seeing them go back to their normal life was
hard. They had a huge problem trusting anyone that was interesting in them
emotionally. They thought that they were alone on this and that no one could
relate to how they felt. I want to raise awareness on this topic. Victims
who are sexually abused feel like they are alone in this topic so for my friend
and all the victims I want people to start being more aware of this.
Anyone can be sexually abused and I want people to know
that.
This
project intersects with my professional aspirations because I want to be
a physical therapist in hopes of helping many people get better.
Sexually abused victims need help just like the patients I will have.
I want to be in the business of helping others and this project is a good way
of doing it.
You can also reference Artemisia Gentileschi, Susanna and the elders because we learned a lot about that piece and how the woman was avoiding the male gaze.
ReplyDeleteThis issue has been going on for a very long time, and is becoming bigger lately. It's a great issue to shed some more light upon. You can talk about how sexual assault has increased over the past couple of years, and compare it to decades before, and what aspects has influenced these changes.

ReplyDeleteI really like that you are making this project based on a topic that is personal to you and that you can relate to because of your friend. Unfortunately, sexual abuse has been going on since the beginning of time it feels like. I just want to ask if you are planning on discussing sexual abuse on women, men, or both?
ReplyDeleteAlso, a suggestion is maybe you could incorporate art pieces by artists who draw or paint about sexual abuse stories or just artists that have been sexually abused themselves and see if they draw/paint about that in some of their artwork.
I also think you could incorporate some the women and men speaking out now in Hollywood for example, about how they've been sexually abused by people who abuse their power. Example: Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K.

ReplyDeleteThis is an important issue especially to the modern media today. Maybe you can search how making art helped these artists deal with the abuse done to them.
