Where Art Meets Fashion Lookbook: Semester Project

Where Art Meets Fashion: Lookbook

Originally, I was going to make a Youtube video on a look-book I was creating based around the female artists Tony Gum, Patricia Iglesias and Sonia Delaunay. Now, I still did a look-book but it is in the form of a blog I made on my Tumblr instead of a Youtube video. In the early stages of my look-book video I was starting to make, I was recording and taking pictures. But soon after, I decided that the pictures and photography aspect spoke more to me than trying to record and video as well. The video idea was a bit too ambitious for me because of all the software and editing that I would have to do and had never done before. I also had never created my own blog before either but I really enjoyed making the blog and have found a new hobby through this project. The process of making the video was becoming very stressful for me and took the enjoyment out of it. So I decided to make a blog instead. I was originally going to have three different models but I ended up having to model and photograph as well because one of the original models couldn't make it.

The blog that I created is made public on my Tumblr so that not just my friends are allowed to see, but also anyone who comes across it can read and look at it as well. A look-book is essentially a video or a set of photographs that display a fashion designer or person's collection of clothing. It could be clothing, shoes, bags and/or accessories that someone got from thrift stores and wanted to show others, all the way to a having well known fashion designers like Moschino wanting to show his newest collection. The way to get the looks out there is through look-books. It was originally made for marketing purposes in the fashion industry for companies and designers but has now expanded to everyday 'normal' people being able to display outfits they have put together and want to show the public.

I made my blog about nine different outfit looks I put together inspired by the three artists named earlier. Each model was styled in three different outfits that incorporated patterns or colors or themes in each artists' artwork or their personal style. I love fashion so this project for me was to explore the fashion side of art because after all, fashion is a type of art. I took headshots of each model, while one model took pictures of me, with different patterns as the background or backdrop that I thought depicted and best represented each artists' personal style. I made the three backgrounds for each model with their outfits in mind and the style of the artist they would be representing that I pieced together to create the big backdrop. Everything from the pattern type on a model's pants to the type of earring she wore, whether it was a dangle earring or a stud, to even the color of the lipstick on each model was carefully thought about and put there for a reason. I wanted to incorporate each of my model's personal style into the look as well so that they would feel comfortable in what they were wearing so the pictures would come out better. When you are comfortable in what you are wearing, it shows and helps the model feel at ease when posing for pictures. The models posed on stairs, next to trees, the street, the ground, anywhere near our shooting location basically.

On my blog, I explain about the artist I chose, give a brief synopsis about their life or artwork and a few photos of their artwork and the artist themselves just to give a brief summary about the pictures the public is about to see when they scroll down. I added some music to my blog so that it doesn't need to be looked at in silence, the viewer can listen to songs that I placed in there because I felt it went with the vibe I want my viewer to be in while reading my blog. My blog is very colorful and packed with photos. All the way at the end of the blog are outtakes or pictures that didn't make the cut. Most of the outtakes are funny pictures for the viewer's entertainment. I enjoyed the process of making this project and hope the viewers enjoy the content too!
