Semester Project

For my semester project, I decided to pick artists that show women in daily life. I wanted to pick someone whom I can connect with myself and from the background, I come from. The artists I picked are Arpita Singh and Nilima Sheikh. The reason I choose them is that their only focus through their paintings was to spread awareness about the issue going on with women in India. Women in some parts of India were not allowed to gain a higher education or encouraged to achieve their goals. They were abused by men and were attached to do labor work since childhood.
Sheikh focused on how a girl's life was before marriage and how she was treated after marriage and she also showed how in-between all of these no one bothers to ask her what she wanted to do. Whereas, Singh mainly focused on how women were treated by men. She focused on the patriarchal structure formed by the society and how men were raised that they are superior and could do anything they want.
Singh painted the patriarchal society of India and also focused on the male gaze. She showed how men were stronger and always commanded women for what they should do and what not.
The painting that inspired me the most to pick this topic was the 12 series of paintings by Nilima Sheikh which is titled "When Champa Grew Up." Sheikh showed the life of a girl named Champa and how she was raised by her family. She showed the life of Champa before and after her marriage.

I made a powerpoint presentation where I picked the paintings of Singh and Sheikh and explained how their paintings connect to my topic. I made an Instagram account and posted my full presentation on the account and I hope when people see it, they would realise that even in this modern world, women are not given their deserved rights and are not treated with respect in some parts of the world and I hope they would help spread awareness to stop treating women wrong.
