Semester Project

Feminism. Everyone has a different understanding of the word. The fight for equality of both genders has been going on for years, and still continues today. I created this Tumblr blog to shed light on the matter and give people a better understanding of what "feminism" means. I included female artists who support feminism, as well as different types of art projects that were inspired by feminism, such as "The Dinner Party" (learn more about its significance on the blog!!). Feminist movements have always inspired me and I am so happy that I got a chance to share my passion on this blog. I love being able to use this online platform to try to make a change and inspire others. I invite you to scroll through my Tumblr blog, watch the video clips, read the descriptions, and take a few minutes to absorb the content and develop your own interpretations. Feel free to leave comments under posts and start an important conversation about feminism! This is an on-going blog, which means it's only the beginning. If you feel inspired by my blog, please share it with others! By sharing it you are bringing awareness to a significant topic. Lets spread the message to millions in hopes of sparking a movement that can change history forever!

FINAL EXAM STUDY GUIDE

Final Exam is Tuesday, December 12th 11:30-12:50pm BE ON TIME!

SEMESTER PROJECT (extension) posted and edited on the blog by 11:59pm on THURSDAY 12/14. You may edit posts and projects until 11:59 on 12/14. Projects will be reviewed and graded on Friday 12/15. Read instructions below carefully for requirements.

Projects will not be presented in class. Use the post on the blog as your opportunity to "present" your project to the class. Make sure your post is well edited, includes images and explains the project clearly. Check and triple check that the link to your project is working properly. Include as much documentation of the project as possible.

Based on the discussions and artists' work presented in class and in your readings please create a media based project which focuses on women, women artists, art, art history and a social issue and frame the issue to specifically address how this affects the lives of women and/or how women can be instrumental in solving or raising awareness about this issue. You can choose to focus on a specific artist whose work is socially engaged or addresses socio-economic or political issues, an art movement or another creative approach to raising awareness through the publication of information or creative expression.

The assignment can take many forms: Essay with embedded images. Video: music, documentary, performance, Research paper, Researched article or extensive slideshow with captions or narration (think NYTimes), Workshop or other outreach curriculum, Magazine/Zine, Podcast, Interactive Web Project/Site.

Please remember:

-you must address an audience or group outside of the classroom in some way.

-this can take any form you choose but must include women artists, art history and research.

-it must raise awareness about a social issue.

-You must create a post on the blog for your project. This post will be part of your project grade. The post must include a link to your project (including pdf projects) online.

-Include a resource list and bibliography at the end of your post listing your research and inspiration.

-The post of your project should be a "pitch" or short description of what you have made and should be clear, inspiring and high energy. Imagine you are trying to have a group decide to fund your project for further development this is how you should present the summary on the blog.

-All projects MUST be published and distributed to an audience (outside of the class). Please include appropriate links to your projects online in your post!

-Print projects such as paper zines, essays and pamphlets must be handed in to me in class. Please provide descriptions of how these have been or will be distributed to an audience online or in print.

EXTRA CREDIT if you did not attend the museum trip

(up to 4pts) - due 12/7

Visit the Brooklyn Museum. You must visit the Roots of The Dinner Party exhibition and The Dinner Party and please also find the Mickalene Thomas piece on the 5th floor. Read any supporting materials, wall text and labels for the exhibition and the works you find elsewhere in the museum.

Write a short description of the Dinner Party, the themes and the techniques it uses to address gender, history, art and craft. Choose 2 other pieces in the museum to connect to The Dinner Party. Write how these other works spoke to you and connected to the themes of The Dinner Party.

Please reference the Brooklyn Museum and our textbooks. Cite any research you include.

YOU MUST INCLUDE PHOTOS THAT YOU TAKE!! Include a selfie with the Dinner Party and several photos of the exhibitions and the two additional pieces you choose to help illustrate your descriptions.

Can you name 5 women artists?

Concentrating on contemporary artists, choose 5 women artists to illustrate and briefly explain various themes we have discussed throughout the course about gender, race, class and art history. You can organize your post into genres, 'isms, political or societal messages, aesthetics, techniques or personal narratives. You must choose a clear thesis and the 5 artists carefully. Your post MUST include artists working today. Be sure to illustrate your post with various images (and/or videos) and to cite your research.

Please reference the Brooklyn Museum and the exhibitions of the Sackler Center if you visit/visited. Feel free to include or tie in the topic of your final assignment if appropriate. You can use this opportunity to dive into that research for this post if you can find overlap.

Help with resources, links to inspirational examples, other projects, articles, books, scholars, and any other resources that might be helpful for various topics. Leave helpful criticism about narrowing of ideas, production direction or tips, distribution ideas and any other help you can provide. Spend time on these!

What is modernism? How did women artists in Europe influence the techniques and development of modernism and the movements of abstraction, German expressionism, dada and surrealism and other movements in modernism? What important circumstances aided these and how were women integral in applying the techniques of design and craft in these new approaches to art?

Compare and contrast these with Post-Modernism. What is Post Modernism? How have women artists been instrumental in the development of its main themes? Please include examples of each of the movements within modernism and examples of post-modern art. Explain the specifics of these new approaches to art and art-making in the 20C.

~800 words. Include citations of the class readings in your post (Chadwick and Guerrilla Girls). Please be sure to include at least five images (examples) and two links.

SEMESTER PROJECT Keep researching and working on production of your semester project. Please remember that the project MUST intersect art, gender and art history in some way and be informed by RESEARCH. Know your topic in depth but also find inspiring examples and artists that address the same issues or use similar techniques. You can continue to adjust and refocus your ideas but if you make drastic changes to the general topic please email me a quick update. I will return your full proposals next week with some feedback. Keep working over the weekend! Remember to talk about your project with friends and co-workers and family and professors and generally with all of the cool people you know! The more you think about it and put it into the world the better you will understand it and the more developed your ideas will become.

This is a very self-designed assignment. Please use this opportunity to plan a project that focuses on your talents, your strengths and as an opportunity to learn and explore something of your choosing.

Please be as specific as possible. Also include some RESEARCH you have done or are planning, inspirational examples you are looking to as models and other resources you plan to use. Remember that this should be a portfolio piece for you. Be thoughtful in designing how this project might best fit into your professional ambitions.

What were the expected roles of women in Europe in the Middle Ages? How did roles for women change throughout the Renaissance and into the 19C? Please explain how these roles influenced the lives of women artists and the subjects of their work. Using references to the readings and to discussions in class, please use examples through the 19C to illustrate the challenges women artists faced. How did they overcome these or reference them in their work?

Choose a possible topic for your semester project. Type up a few sentences (or a whole page) with the idea you would like to pursue. You will hand this in at the beginning of class. Your topic can focus on an artist, a genre, a style, a social issue addressed by an artist/artists, a collective of artists, artists as activists, a particular theme throughout several artists' work, a specific artwork analyzed, etc. Please specify how you plan to share this project with an audience. We will discuss these ideas further in class.

*Remember this project should fit into YOUR portfolio and also satisfy something that you want to accomplish.

What is the male gaze (as described by John Berger) and why is it pervasive in art and in popular culture? Give illustrative examples. What is patriarchy (as described by bell hooks)? Give examples.
