Semester Project

For my semester project, I made a Tumblr blog on the Pop Art Movement and how it turned imagery into a culture by its popularity in advertisements and comic books. I found this style of art an interesting topic because it relates to many of our class discussions. Similarly related to the male gaze, Pop Art is also responsible for introducing the sexualization and objectification of women into society’s mainstream window as early as the 1900s.

The earlier posts on my blog compare the beginning of Pop Art’s representation of products and how it quickly turned to women for commercial use. There is aslo a focus on the differences or similarities of pop art from male and female artists as well. My blog also compares Pop Art from the 1900s to present-day paintings to see if it has evolved or improved throughout the years.

While doing research on Pop Art, I came across the subject of “Art Pop,” which carries the inspiration of pop art from singers through their music, fashion and cinema. Since I am a journalism major with an interest in entertainment media, I thought it would be interesting to merge both art and pop culture in order to discuss its influence on famous figures over time. The most recent posts relate towards fans of music and art, especially those who advocate gender equality.

I initially planned to complete my project in the form of an article, but the website I planned to have it published on has not launched yet. Because of this, I decided to create a Tumblr blog as a timeline where the article is split into a various number of posts. This gives viewers a clearer understanding of the topic while allowing them access to more visuals and artwork from Pop Artists.
