Semester Project

My zine is about women body shamming (it's on tumblr). Body shaming can affect more than a person’s body, but also their mentality. Women in ads are shown with the perfect, but not everyone has that kind of body. Women are told to change their bodies to fit in with society’s viewpoint of a perfect body. Many people do not realize that body shaming comments can lead to people with eating disorders, low self-esteem, and future health problems. For example, “I don’t know what you’re doing, but you look SO MUCH healthier now. Props to losing all that weight. #TheySaid after I developed anorexia” -Ashley Scarlett. I was inspired by Zhu Tian’s artworks and follow her style “to interrupt and disturb”. One of her artworks “Babe” 2013, are heels with body hair. She questioned whether heels were sexy or was society told they were sexy. She made them to deconstruct stereotyping high heels as femininity and sexual appeal. Also, her other artwork, “Waiting like a Prostitute, Half Shamed Half Despaired” Zhu Tian, 2015, as it shows clothes hanging outside to dry. But the neon lights make it look similar to a prostitute area. Making daily chores seen as sexual by the person who sees it. The cover of my zine was from the example I used previously about anorexia but a bit dark. My zine was also based on more on how body shaming comments can make you feel mentally and the urge to change it. I made this zine to "interrupt" people that view it and think about why the person is doing what they are doing. The title seems corny, but please check it out when you have time.
