Alisha Robinson, Semester Project.

Alisha Robinson

Art and Women Fall 2017 Final Semester Project

For this project, I want to show how much of an extraordinary artist and influential woman Ms. Carrie Mae Weems. She is an African American woman artist whose artwork revolves around mostly photography and other artistic elements. She is considered one the most influential contemporary American artists. Her work brings up discussion about relationships, on a social and political level, cultural identity issues, and issues of privilege. She is not only an artist but also a social activist who continues to fight for equality amongst races and genders.

My idea was to create an online magazine that describes some of her best highlights of her career.
The full magazine article I created is below.
Carrie Mae Weems is an inspiration to me because she depicts African American culture and simplifies it in an interesting way. She is an amazing photographer who knows how to capture the right moment. Her Kitchen Table Series is personally one of my favorites, and photographs from that are featured in this magazine. Since this is posted online already, it is free for the world to view. Many female artists, especially African Americans, are not given enough credit for the amazing work they produce. I believe Weems is an artist all should read and know about. A picture is worth a thousand words but Carrie Mae Weems pictures are worth a million.
